Hathern Dog Rescue was set up in 2006 by a small, caring & dedicated group of volunteers who wanted to help improve the welfare of stray & abandoned dogs at College Garth Kennels. We have helped with vet needs, kennel improvements, special food & medication,vaccinations, neutering, toys, coats, a dog trainer to come in. We are not a charity - we are volunteer fundraisers.
Did you know that on average, in the UK, 21 dogs are destroyed every day by local authorities? These dogs are either strays, or dogs that have been handed in by their owners.
The law states that the dogs must remain in the care of the local authority for 7 days, in order for strays to be reclaimed, or to be rehomed elsewhere. After the 7 days have been served, the dog can, by law, be destroyed. Rescue don't breed.
We also help other animal rescues such as www.dogsos.co.uk & www.dun-roamin.com who both rescue dogs off death row when we can. We will help towards the cost of having your ex Hathern dog neutered, each case assessed individually we will contribute from £20 upwards to your bill, up to 6 months after rehomimg .
We are volunteers based at College Garth Rescue Kennels, Derby Rd, Hathern, Loughborough, Leics who take in dogs from NWLDC, Charnwood & Melton Councils. Telephone: 01509 842327.

National Microchipping month-June According to the latest Dogs Trust UK annual stray dog report; local councils took in an estimated 96,892 dogs in 2008; 6,710 were put to sleep - many through lack of space. This equates to around 129 per week or 18 every day.
If all of these dogs were microchipped a significant number would have been reunited with their owners Microchipping-Saturday mornings at the kennels by appointment only £15. Don't risk losing your dog by not having proper identification! Tags are a legal requirment on your dog-you can be fined for not having a correct identification tag on your dog at all times.
Bad News!
The number of stray dogs in the UK increased for the 1st time in ‘Dogs Trust’ Records which began in 1997.
The stray population in this country shot up from 98,892 to 107,228* The number of unclaimed strays put to sleep rocketed from 6,710 to 9,310
Why? Possibly due to the change in law regarding stray dogs. In 2008 the law changed so that local authorities had sole responsibility for dealing with strays, prior to this it was shared with the police. The extra burden given to local authorities with little extra funding, may well have been responsible for more dogs being put to sleep:{

In 2007 the Animal Welfare Act came into force, to improve the well-being of pets. This Act states that anyone who is responsible for a pet must look after them properly and take reasonable steps to ensure that their welfare needs are met. This is called a "duty of care" and it is to ensure that owners meet their pet's welfare needs, which depend on good physical and mental health.
The needs of your pet are known as the "five welfare needs" and include:
A suitable environment
A suitable diet
To be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns
To be housed with, or apart from, other animals
Protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease
If you are thinking of getting a pet, you have to remember that this is a long term commitment. You will need to provide for your pet, taking into account the "duty of care" that you will now have.
